hello

A new Doctor Who Magazine goes on sale today, from all good newsagents. In it, I talk exclusively to the Doctor’s new companion, actress Jenna-Louise Coleman. She says things like, “It was a toss up between the two: a cabbage or a lesbian.” Also:

“I know what my introduction is, and I have a general idea of where we’re going to go. There’s definitely a story arc. It sounds really interesting, really exciting. I don’t think anything’s been done like it before, but there are lots of secrets and intrigue, and I think it’s going to throw and confuse a lot of people, and surprise a lot of people.”

Also this issue, I interview executive producer Caroline Skinner (“Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary will be one of the biggest moments in BBC One’s history”) and 1980s companion Mark Strickson (“Turlough is quite difficult morally He could be easily persuaded to do something he shouldn’t”), and I present my guide to 30 (More) People Every Doctor Who Fan Should Follow on Twitter, speaking to former Who girl Nicola Bryant, current series regular Arthur Darvill, and writer Tom MacRae. Meanwhile, The Fact of Fiction uncovers 1984 serial The Twin Dilemma; the Time Team considers 2006′s The Girl in the Fireplace; Tom Spilsbury interviews Madame de Pompadour herself, actress Sophia Myles; Who supremo Steven Moffat reports from behind-the-scenes at the audition process for the new companion; the first part of a brand new comic strip adventure, Sticks & Stones, by Scott Gray and Martin Geraghty… plus, all the latest news, reviews, previews, and competitions.

hello

A new issue of Doctor Who Magazine goes on sale tomorrow. It features my in-depth interview with Sophie Aldred, who played trailblazing 1980s companion Ace. Here’s what she has to say about twenty-first-century companions Rose and Amy:

“There was such a lot of good about Ace in terms of connecting with an audience, and the reality and naturalism of the character, which Rose took up with a vengeance. Rose is much more emotionally developed and rounded a person, and she’s not so f***ed up, but I’d like to think that there is a connection We never thought, at the time, how far-reaching our episodes would be – especially now, with this rebirth of the series, people discovering our episodes for the first time. It would be interesting to see what Amy Pond thought of Ace…”

Also in DWM 441, I interview Canton actors Mark Sheppard (“It’s time for a guy who’s not mincing around the screen, shouting at everybody that they’re repressing him”) and his dad, W Morgan Sheppard (“Canton is anarchic. He is very anti-authority. He deals with his life in his own particularly eccentric way”); in her first Production Notes, executive producer Caroline Skinner recounts her trip Down Under for the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular; Toby Hadoke and Johnny Candon argue whether rewriting history is ever justified; 1964 serial The Keys of Marinus is scrutinised in The Fact of Fiction; the Time Team goes back to school to watch 2006 episode School Reunion; the Doctor is at the mercy of Zeus in the final, world-changing installment of Scott Gray and Mike Collins’ The Chains of Olympus comic strip… and all the latest news, reviews, previews, and competitions.

Doctor Who Magazine is available from all good newsagents.

EDIT (23:30, 07/03): This is nice. RT @sophie_aldred: @benjamin_cook Thanks to you for the great interview in DWM. It’s just what I actually said, for a change. (07/03/2012 22:44)

Sorry, second rule. First rule is big fish > little fish. I was a little fish, and I don’t want to talk about it. (24/01/2012 21:30)

hello

Both Atlantis and the doomed planet in Galaxy 4 were presumed lost forever. But now they’re back! The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine (on sale today, from all good newsagents) celebrates the return of Air Lock and The Underwater Menace Episode Two to the BBC archives. I chat to 1960s series regulars Maureen O’Brien (“It’s a cultural snobbism”), Anneke Wills (“All our missing episodes are probably stored away in somebody’s attic”) and Frazer Hines (“I never got a hug”), Underwater Menace guest star Catherine Howe (“I’ve always understood musicians more than actors”), and writers of twenty-first-century Who Mark Gatiss and Robert Shearman.

Also in DWM 443, I interview Let’s Kill Hitler director Richard Senior, who describes the episode as “televisual Marmite” and says things like:

“It’s taken me a long time to come to terms with the difference between the aspirations I had for this amazing episode when I first read the script, and what actually got made. A little part of me will always watch it and think, ‘If only we’d had a bit more time’ or ‘If only I’d thought of that.’ But I’m coming to terms with that I’m just glad we provoked a passionate response.”

Elsewhere, Marcus Hearn interviews Robert Banks Stewart, writer of 1970s stories Terror of the Zygons and The Seeds of Doom (featuring as this month’s choice of covers – eyes left); Dan Tostevin catches up with Tom Baker and Louise Jameson as they prepare to battle the Master, Daleks and Kraals in Big Finish’s newest series of audio dramas; the Time Team revisits 2006 episode New Earth; Fact of Fiction puts the same year’s Love & Monsters under the microscope, with additional commentary from writer Russell T Davies; Mark Gatiss gives some tantalising hints about his next Doctor Who script, in Production Notes; Part Two of comic strip adventure The Chains of Olympus, written by Scott Gray and drawn by Mike Collins… and all the latest news, reviews, previews, and competitions.

hello

The Christmas issue of Doctor Who Magazine goes on sale today, featuring my 16-page preview of The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. I go behind the scenes to see the episode brought to life, and chat to Eleventh Doc Matt Smith, Chrimbo Special companions Maurice Cole and Holly Earl, and guest stars Bill Bailey, Arabella Weir, and Alexander Armstrong. Here are some exclusive audio clips from my interviews with Matt and Maurice (discussing their respective roles), Bill (explaining the genesis of his famous ‘Belgian jazz version’ of the Who theme), and Arabella (on her best friend – and former lodger – David Tennant):

Matt Smith (DWM 442)

Maurice Cole (DWM 442)

Bill Bailey (DWM 442)

Arabella Weir (DWM 442)

Also, I speak to Doctor Who showrunner – and writer of the upcoming Christmas episode – Steven Moffat, who hints at what’s to come in the 2012 and 2013 series:

“I want to be able to say, every week, we’ve got a big standalone blockbuster, and then a trailer that makes it look like nothing compared to what’s going to happen next week! That’s the form for next year… You can sod off with poetic understatement I want slutty titles and movie-poster plots. I want big pictures and straplines… Everyone is expecting us to do another year like 2011. You’re not going to get that at all. You’re going to get the biggest, maddest set of episodes ever.”

Elsewhere in DWM 442… the Watcher unwraps the myriad mysteries of Christmas past; the Time Team relives 2005′s The Christmas Invasion; Alan Barnes wraps up warm for a Tibetan escapade as he scrutinises 1967 serial The Abominable Snowmen; Toby Hadoke and Johnny Candon debate whether it’s right to recast old Doctors with new actors; the Doctor, Amy and Rory take a trip to ancient Greece in a brand new comic-strip adventure, The Chains of Olympus, by Scott Gray, with art by Mike Collins; Steven Moffat turns over Production Notes to answering the burning questions put to him by you, the readers, via Twitter… and all the latest news, reviews, previews, competitions, and much, much more.

FYI, the artwork cover is a homage to the 1924 Christmas issue of Radio Times. DWM editor Tom Spilsbury explains: “We felt that such a pastiche suited the retro setting of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special – particularly as we were able to recast the mother and her two children with the characters in The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. It’s our tribute to the Radio Times Christmas covers of old.” The two covers can be seen side-by-side on the Radio Times website.

Doctor Who Magazine is available from all good newsagents, comic shops, and supermarkets. MERRY CHRISTMAS, Y’ALL!
